It uses the dd (duplicate disk) command. I have already made a complete backup of my iPod classic using dd as a separate partition on my computer. Does the firmware reside on the iPod's HD or is it in NVram? I noticed the emcore instructions have the iPod completely powered off, which makes me think it's not on the HD. If that's the case, would I still be able to restore back using 05:16 < peter__> dd? 05:16 < peter__> Thanks, Peter_ 05:33 -!- S_a_i_n_t [~st.lasciv@124-197-3-117.callplus.net.nz] has quit [Disconnected by services] 05:34 -!- [Saint] [~st.lasciv@124-197-3-117.callplus.net.nz] has joined #freemyipod-support 06:15 < peter__> I was thinking that it would be possible to modify the seven's libipoddfu.py script to read the iPod's firmware to a backup image. 07:16 < [7]> peter__: reading the firmware using dd only works up to the ipod nano 2g 07:16 < [7]> and also that won't capture the bootloader, just the main firmware (which, in the early days, was the only thing we patched) 07:17 < [7]> on the ipod classic (and nowadays also on the nano2g), we rewrite the whole firmware, including the part on the boot flash 07:17 < [7]> you can't dump that through dd, and you can't dump it through DFU either (DFU mode doesn't directly access the flash, but some kind of boot ramdisk) 07:18 < [7]> the only way to make a complete backup would be booting custom code on the ipod (through this ramdisk) and then use that to dump whatever you want 07:19 < [7]> also, on the classic, you won't see the whole HDD on the USB mass storage device, if you're using the apple firmware, so you can't even dump the full hdd using dd 07:20 < [7]> so if you want to backup everything, you should follow the installation process up to the point where the installer shows you the legalese and asks you to accept it 07:20 < [7]> up to that point, nothing on the flash or HDD will be touched 07:20 < [7]> and you can connect through the USB debugging interface to dump these things 13:38 -!- peter__ [~peter@216.151.31.252] has left #freemyipod-support 13:58 -!- [Saint] [~st.lasciv@124-197-3-117.callplus.net.nz] has quit [Quit: Imagination is for turbo-nerds who can't handle how kick-butt reality is.
