I am attempting to install emCORE rockbox on my ipod classic 6g. I have put the ubi onto the 64mb volume, ejected, then booted rockbox. Now the instructions tell me to reconnect the ipod and wait for the drive to become accessible then extract the .zip file directly to the drive. However, the drive does not become readable. My pc tells me that before I can use it, I must format the drive. Any help please? 04:14 < ikeyb> Anyone there? 06:31 < underscor> ikeyb: I don't have a solution to your problem, but it may take multiple hours before someone replies that does 06:31 < underscor> Just so you know :) 06:31 < ikeyb> That's just fine. 07:22 -!- underscor [~asdf@pool-173-79-192-213.washdc.fios.verizon.net] has quit [Quit: Leaving] 07:29 -!- underscor [~asdf@pool-173-79-192-213.washdc.fios.verizon.net] has joined #freemyipod-support 07:35 < ikeyb> Would love some help with this if anyone gets back to me, I'd really appreciate it. Anyone present? 23:05 < [7]> yes 23:06 < [7]> well the behavior you're observing looks like a bad sector in the former firmware partition or something like that 23:07 < [7]> which is now probably somewhere in the middle of filesystem metadata 23:07 < [7]> if you choose "reformat data partition" from the tools menu, how long does that take? 23:07 < [7]> and is the progress (almost) linear, or does it get stuck for a couple of seconds at some points? 23:07 < ikeyb> On the PC, or the iPod itself? 23:09 < ikeyb> What I mean is, formatting via the PC disk management, or via the option on the iPod to format? 23:12 < [7]> i meant on the ipod, but reformatting from the PC would be a possible way to fix it 23:12 < [7]> so you might want to try both 23:22 < ikeyb> Well, from the iPod, it is very linear. On the PC, it CANNOT complete the process, it never even starts. It instantly says that it cannot be completed. However, without the emCORE firmware, I CAN format my iPod's harddrive. 23:22 -!- quorn23 [d9a23251@gateway/web/freenode/ip.217.162.50.81] has joined #freemyipod-support 23:23 < [7]> hm, sounds like it's possibly a USB issue 23:23 < [7]> we do have some of those, but they should have been mitigated in the latest release 23:24 < quorn23> hi there, i just wanted to ask quickly if there is a way to send you some kind of debug log, i have very nasty random lock ups on my ipod. i have the 160gb one, latest version. 23:24 < ikeyb> I have tried it on two different computers. From step one til when I get stuck. One computer is Vista and one is Windows 7. (If any of that matters) 23:25 < quorn23> not sure if its an issue of emcore or rockbox. 23:25 < ikeyb> The reason that I cannot extract the zip to complete the installation process is because that the iPod harddrive is in RAW format. When it's NTFS or FAT I can exchange information fine. But after ubi install, it becomes RAW. Is it supposed to be RAW? 23:28 < [7]> quorn23: random lockups every couple of hours within rockbox? 23:29 < [7]> that's a known rockbox bug, and someone has found out what's actually going on recently 23:29 < [7]> we need to find a proper way to fix that though, it's slightly convoluted 23:29 < [7]> ikeyb: no it isn't 23:30 < ikeyb> Hmm 23:30 < [7]> if this happens reproducibly your only choice is probably to go back to the apple firmware until whatever is causing it has been fixed. might be usb or hdd trouble, not sure 23:30 < [7]> usb is more likely judging from your behavior descriptions 23:31 < quorn23> sometimes after few mins, sometimes after hours, really random and it totaly crashes, with a very loud noise in the headphones 23:31 < ikeyb> Unfortunately, my iPod is stuck in the infamous "Recovery Loop" and I cannot install the Apple Firmware. 23:31 < [7]> yeah, known issue 23:31 < [7]> has something to do with the way the hold switch of the ipod is being read on that model :) 23:31 < [7]> ikeyb: what kind of recovery loop? 23:32 < quorn23> okay, is there a nightly i could try? had an old ipod before so new to the emcore project. 23:32 < [7]> itunes being too dumb to upload a dfu payload? 23:32 < quorn23> oh okay, so i'll try to leave the hold on "unhold" to see if it makes a diffrence 23:32 < ikeyb> When I hook it up, iTunes will say that the iPod is in recovery mode and needs to restore. I restore it, the iPod restarts, and iTunes says it's in recovery mode and needs to be restored. 23:32 < [7]> quorn23: this is purely a rockbox issue, so you can proceed as on any other rockbox device regarding updates etc. 23:33 < ikeyb> No matter how many times iTunes "restores" it, it is still in recovery mode. 23:33 < ikeyb> It 23:33 < [7]> i don't think there are readily-available builds with the proof-of-concept fix applied 23:33 < [7]> but there's a patch on the tracker 23:33 < [7]> (which won't be committed though because it's a nasty hack) 23:33 < ikeyb> It's in a never ending loop of being restored. 23:33 < [7]> ikeyb: so it's stuck in disk mode? 23:34 < [7]> can you format the hdd in disk mode? 23:34 < quorn23> not sure if i understand you 7, sorry english not native. so i have to wait till a new rockbox version is out and i'm more or less wrong with bugging you guys with that bug? :) 23:34 < ikeyb> I can boot it in disk mode, if that's what you're asking. And yes, through my PC I can Format the harddrive, but it still needs to recover through iTunes. Hence my issue. 23:34 < [7]> well, it's a rockbox issue, so it needs to be fixed on that side (i happen to be more or less active in both projects) 23:35 < quorn23> if thats the case i gonna search the rockbox page if they have an irc channel and will ask them if they can make me a build with that nasty hack activated. 23:35 < [7]> and a proof of concept patch for that issue is available, i just don't have a binary of that around right now 23:35 < [7]> quorn23: #rockbox on this server 23:36 < [7]> ikeyb: so you *can* format it after trying to restore with itunes? 23:36 < [7]> that's good news 23:36 < [7]> in theory you can completely restore it without itunes, if that's the problem 23:36 < ikeyb> Oh I can format it all day. I even put 74gigs of crap on it. But there's still no firmware. 23:37 < [7]> we have a tool called ipodscsi.py in our repositories using which you can upload a firmware.mse file 23:37 < quorn23> thanks, i will go to sleep now (0:35am here) and will ask in the rockbox channel tomorrow if someone can build me a testbuild. thanks for the help and sorry that i was in the wrong channel for my issue but you helped me by telling me its a know bug 23:37 < ikeyb> Oh really? 23:37 < quorn23> *known 23:38 < [7]> i just have a felling that the reason for the restore to fail might be the same as the reason for the formatting to fail within rockbox: a broken area on the HDD 23:38 < [7]> it's possible to work around that, but this will get a bit more tricky than just restoring a fully working device 23:38 < ikeyb> I checked my HDD for bad sectors and it came out clean. 23:38 < [7]> feeling* 23:38 < quorn23> have a nice day/night everybody and thanks again to you 7 23:38 < [7]> ikeyb: you can't 23:38 -!- quorn23 is now known as quorn23away 23:39 < [7]> the firmware partition is hidden in disk mode, and apparently you had trouble accessing the device at all in rockbox, so there's no way you could have checked the firmware paritition area for bad sectors :) 23:39 < ikeyb> Okay, you make a valid point :) 23:41 < [7]> http://files.freemyipod.org/misc/ipodscsi.exe 23:42 < [7]> download the restore ipsw, extract it, and run ipodscsi x: ipod6g writefirmware -p firmware.mse 23:42 < [7]> with x: being the ipod's drive letter 23:43 < ikeyb> Will do!
