16:38 < TheSeven> depending on your battery's health and usage behavior I'd estimate around 10-20h of playback time
16:39 < TheSeven> IMO the bigger issue currently is the USB trouble some people have experienced recently
16:40 < TheSeven> (ipod showing as a 0 byte drive or not being detected at all, sometimes locking up during transfers)

16:41 < rudle> hmm, well i have many operating systems at my disposal so that might not be too bad. my ipod currently has issues during playback, so i'm hoping rockbox will remedy that

19:28 < TheSeven> this looks more like hardware instability somewhere else... mainboard / cpu / ram / voltage regulators, possibly HDD interface

19:29 < TheSeven> before throwing it away you might want to try reseating some connectors
19:29 < TheSeven> retracts are basically unclean shutdowns of the HDD, e.g. if the power is shut off without parking the heads first
19:30 < rudle> ah interesting. i used to have a hard crash problem so maybe those are involved
19:30 < TheSeven> yes, they're usually the consequence of a menu+select reboot while the HDD is spinning
19:31 < TheSeven> waiting for half a minute before rebooting usually makes the HDD's inactivity timer park the heads, so you could avoid them that way
19:31 < TheSeven> they stress the mechanics quite a lot (which is why the drives count them), but they should survive like ~10000 of them, reducing overall lifetime expectations of cause
19:31 < TheSeven> so 120 on that counter is nowhere near critical
19:32 < TheSeven> I've seen some badly designed laptop boards doing that on every single shutdown (you can usually notice the clicking sound), but haven't seen drives fail because of that so far
19:33 < rudle> good info. so i guess cracking the case is the next step (as soon as i get it restored)
