Did anyone see my message from last night about my iPod 160 and emcore? [20:16:30] I see (buried) in the messages something about a bootstrapping tool. Searched and found bootstrapping instructions, but only for linux (not windows). [20:28:21] Think it over, bootstrapping on windows is this tool - "bootstrap_ipodclassic_itunes.exe", yes? [20:28:36] If so, I get the following dialog box: [20:29:07] "UMSBoot has been launched!" [OK] [20:29:20] And a command window with the following error: [20:30:40] "Createfile: Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified." [20:30:57] I assume the error is because the iPod is not being recognized. [20:31:05] by windows [20:36:19] Ooooh! After letting it sit, I came back to eject it and found a screen on the iPod instructing me to copy a UBI file to the mass storage device (iPod) and I have a generic "removable disc" under my computer. [20:39:47] Seems to have really perplexed the hell out of windows though. It's still giving me the "spinning circle" busy cursor when I try and access it. [20:42:40] Bah! It crashed windows explorer. Now I need to reboot. :( [20:46:27] *** Quits: aroneo (4b8c79d3@gateway/web/freenode/ip.75.140.121.211) (Quit: Page closed) [20:52:43] *** Joins: aronei (4b8c79d3@gateway/web/freenode/ip.75.140.121.211) [21:00:01] Okay, this time I tried running the bootstrap program. Basically the same errors and all, but after sometime windows reported the drive to be removable drive with 63.9mb storage. I can't copy anything to it though. the copy process just stalls. [21:14:49] Drive finally shows as UMSBoot in the USB devices. But The copy process hangs windows explorer. Fortunatley it will restart if I unplug the ipod. [21:21:47] is it possible there is a service that should be running but isn't? I initially killed the two services listed in the wiki/instructions, but thought maybe something should be running that the ipod needs. [21:27:06] <[7]> aronei: the bootstrapping tool error is normal [21:27:24] <[7]> it's in fact an indicator that exploiting the ipod's bootloader worked (and thus the bootloader doesn't respond anymore) [21:27:42] <[7]> what is not normal is the trouble accessing the drive, but it has been reported by several users so far [21:27:42] okay [21:28:13] <[7]> however we haven't yet figured out what exactly causes that, as none of the developers can properly reproduce it (it just seems to work for us, for whatever reason) [21:28:48] hmmm... [21:28:51] <[7]> however I'm currently working on a rebuild from scratch of the component in question and have a beta version awailable that seems to solve these problems - it just hasn't been packaged into a windows bootstrapping tool yet [21:29:57] <[7]> are you, by any chance, running this on a windows 8 system? or on a system that has USB3 ports? those are the main suspects right now. [21:30:41] Windows 8 64 bit. [21:30:56] <[7]> hm. seems like that triggers a bug in our USB driver or something [21:31:07] Thinkpad twist with i believe USB 2.0 on one side 3.0 on the other. [21:31:12] I can double check though. [21:31:28] Or I can switch to a different machine with win 7 and usb 2.0 only [21:31:35] <[7]> user890104, [Saint]: does one of you happen to have a windows mingw build environment handy? [21:31:44] <[7]> that might be worth trying [21:32:20] mingw? [21:35:08] assume mingw was directed at developers. [21:37:04] you want I stay on this machine to try and troubleshoot or attempt it on the win 7/ usb 2.0 machine? [21:40:56] <[7]> try to get it to work using the win7 machine for now [21:41:27] <[7]> we most certainly have a fix for newer systems, but it hasn't been packaged for windows systems yet, and I don't have any windows systems myself anymore to do this on [21:42:05] <[7]> if you want to mess around with it you could either install mingw and attempt to build your own bootstrapper, or install python and the whole libusb stuff to bootstrap the ipod the linux way [21:43:18] I think that might be a little out of my range. I'll try the bootstrapper on my win 7 machine and report back. [21:43:39] thanks for the replies. At least I know it's not just me being stupid.
