Was here yesterday trying to get an install completed on a win 8 machine which ended horribly. Installed Ubuntu and trying a go with the linux install and need some help: I have installed PYUSB 1.0 to both Python 2.7.5 and 3.0. I run the command "sudo python ipoddfu.py bootstrap-ipodclassic-*.dfu" and the ipod does NOT disply UMS and no errors echo on the terminal. Any ideas? [14:17:28] Same event when I run sudo python2 and python3, btw. Lastly, the link is broken to the 2.x version of libipoddfu.py in the step-by-step guide on freemyipod.org. [14:46:00] <[Saint]> this is probably the same trap another user fell into [14:47:04] <[Saint]> I admit its not clear to peopel without experience, but on systems where python2.* is still the default, even if you have python3 installed, you need to tell things you specifically want to use python3 instead. [14:47:50] <[Saint]> Which means you need to re-run the pyusb installation, and the libipoddfu script substituting python for python3 [14:48:41] will give that a shot. ty and will be back [14:49:38] <[Saint]> just in case its nt clear, I mean doing "sudo python3 blab_blah" instead of "sudo python blah_blah" [14:52:24] well wait... I DID have the issue of usb.core not being found and installed using both python2 and python3. the usb.core issue is now gone and when I run sudo python ipoddfu.py literally NOTHING is echoed on the terminal. Goes to another $ prompt. Repeated usingusing python, python2 and python3 [14:54:55] in all fairness, when I run with python3 it DOES prompt me for password, but when I enter it, back to command prompt [14:55:35] This is all being done on a laptop that had earlier issues with a windows 8.1 install... is it possible this is a hardware USB issue? [14:55:39] <[Saint]> you're absolutely sure you ran the pyusb install with "python3" instead of "python"? [14:57:02] absolutely. I am honestly a linux noob, but before I ran the python3 install I was getting the usb.core not found issue. I'll reinstall tho. [14:57:48] is the script compatible with all versions of pyusb 1.0? [14:59:29] <[Saint]> as long as its 1.* or greater, it should be, yes. [15:06:23] So I have run sudo python3 setup.py install and all files have been copied. Still same situation. [15:10:25] <[Saint]> I honestly can't think of any situation that would cause libipoddfu to exit out with no prompting of any kind. [15:10:36] <[Saint]> Something in this setup is very ill. [15:14:08] Fair enough. I'll head out and try to decrapify the setup and get back to a baseline to start again. Thanks for the time :) [15:15:50] *** Quits: Dooder (58444fb1@gateway/web/freenode/ip.88.68.79.177) (Quit: Page closed) [16:50:23] *** Quits: krnlyng (~liar@83.175.90.24) (Ping timeout: 260 seconds) [17:42:32] *** Joins: krnlyng (~liar@83.175.90.24) [18:02:27] *** Joins: Dooder (58444fb1@gateway/web/freenode/ip.88.68.79.177) [18:05:14] Saint, seven. Just wanted to come back here and thank you guys for the help. Windows 8 yesterday and a bunged python install today were halting my efforts, but have the install completed and running well. Install was completed on same computer using same cords on same USB port under Ubuntu when it failed under Win8. Thanks again for the assistance and keep up the good work!
