I had a quick question about an iPod Classic 120GB [18:06:28] *** Quits: CATBRUSH (~shinji@50-88-120-232.res.bhn.net) (Quit: Changing server) [18:46:18] *** Quits: STeeF (~STeeF@office.hostnetbv.nl) (Remote host closed the connection) [20:27:56] *** Joins: Cunctator (4f2a005d@gateway/web/freenode/ip.79.42.0.93) [20:33:10] Hi there, if ever The7, Saint or Franklin are online, I'd need some debugging :) [22:14:08] write your question, and if there is someone who can help you, they most likely will [22:18:58] well, it's really a continuing issue, I had a long chat with Sain about it a few days back, so he knows the background (the problem ended up being my iPod having HDD issues, but considering that it was brand new straight out of the box, I'm still not 100% sure that the emCORE installation had nothing to do with it). I suppose that the most direct question I can ask is: is it normal to see, on my iPod, a "fuzzy" Apple scree [22:19:29] of the screen straight after I run the bootstrap and the 64mb partiton shows up under "my computer"? [22:22:07] (incidentally, the closest thing to my issue is described in this thread: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,47895.0.html. With the exception that this guy had issues *after* moving the .ubi file. -- or so I understand from what he wrote. [22:23:51] can you take a picture of the screen? [22:24:16] our LCD driver doesn't work well on all lcd types [22:31:48] uploading, hold on [22:32:42] https://dumpyourphoto.com/photo/9s1TBpI0Cw [22:33:18] if I Eject it without copying the UBI file in, a small black rectangle with text inside comes out complianing about a UBI file missing (no wonder) [22:33:39] I just want to know if I should go on with the installation or if this is a bad sign that tells me to stop [22:35:15] that's an old LCD driver bug [22:35:20] which should be fixed in latest UMSboot [22:35:35] completely harmless though (except for not showing some instruction messages) [22:36:07] the fuzzy apple logo that you see is basically what's left over in the video RAM after a power cycle, i.e. slightly corrupted old data [22:36:31] we just don't set the pixel range to be updated correctly, causing the driver to just draw that black bar on the left [22:36:52] so this is not in any way causing HDD damage? I know this sounds nuts, but it was so odd that my previous iPod died in 2 days that I feel a bit paranoid [22:38:13] (like, I just ran a diagnostic, and i've got 1 "RETRACT" that wasn't there earlier this afternoon...) [22:42:18] well anways I'll try to go through with the process and see if it works. [23:35:03] those retracts are the result of a forced menu+select reser while the disk is spinning [23:35:22] that does put some mechanical stress on the disk, however they're designed to withstand a few thousands of them
