[00:02:14] i have an ipod classic which i can't get to display anything (except a "restore via itunes" message once) and itunes won't restore it for me (something about an unsupported version) … should i try the steps from your "Restore iPod without iTunes" or should i go to the store with it? [00:04:47] i can hear the disconnect and connect sounds from windows when i press menu and select for long enough and itunes shows that "unable to connect update server. unsupported version"-message … but thats all … nothing on the ipod screen since that "restore with itunes"-message and before that it was black for a long time too [00:33:25] *** Joins: krnlyng_ (~liar@83.175.90.24) [00:35:28] *** Quits: krnlyng (~liar@77.117.6.151.wireless.dyn.drei.com) (Ping timeout: 256 seconds) [00:37:07] *** Joins: gtraskep (974be4c0@gateway/web/freenode/ip.151.75.228.192) [00:37:29] *** Quits: gtraskep (974be4c0@gateway/web/freenode/ip.151.75.228.192) (Client Quit) [01:39:41] *** Quits: krnlyng_ (~liar@83.175.90.24) (Quit: huiiiiii) [01:40:07] *** Joins: krnlyng (~liar@77.117.6.151.wireless.dyn.drei.com) [02:41:51] *** Quits: krnlyng (~liar@77.117.6.151.wireless.dyn.drei.com) (Ping timeout: 256 seconds) [02:46:01] *** Joins: krnlyng (~liar@83.175.90.24) [03:27:41] *** Quits: krnlyng (~liar@83.175.90.24) (Quit: huiiiiii) [03:29:43] *** Joins: krnlyng (~liar@178.114.102.172.wireless.dyn.drei.com) [05:07:23] *** Quits: krnlyng (~liar@178.114.102.172.wireless.dyn.drei.com) (Ping timeout: 264 seconds) [05:29:44] *** Joins: krnlyng (~liar@178.114.102.172.wireless.dyn.drei.com) [06:12:15] *** Quits: TheSeven (~quassel@rockbox/developer/TheSeven) (Ping timeout: 260 seconds) [06:13:35] *** Joins: TheSeven (~quassel@rockbox/developer/TheSeven) [15:53:10] *** Joins: user890104 (Venci@unaffiliated/user890104) [15:53:14] *** Server sets mode: +nt [20:18:29] *** Joins: user890104 (Venci@unaffiliated/user890104) [20:19:02] *** Server sets mode: +nt [20:19:15] *** Server sets mode: +nt [20:43:53] romibi: I vaguely remember seeing that before on an ipod of which itunes couldn't tell which exact model it was [20:44:13] (in DFU mode, nano3g and classic look exactly the same, as they have the same processor chip) [20:45:02] so if some data on the flash is corrupted (but that usually isn't ever written to) that cause such an error [20:45:06] that's just speculation though [20:46:12] you can try the "restore without itunes" instructions, but my guess would be that it will never come up in disk mode [20:46:28] (you're basically just doing what itunes attempted to do anyway) [20:46:51] could still be worth a try if itunes has some weird bug, you don't really have anything to lose at this point [20:47:07] you could also try firing up an emcore installer to check if that reports any issues [20:47:35] after having it some hours on the power i was able to get it recognized by itunes … then i wanted to go into diagnose mode and everything broke again (always connected to pc or power) … then after waiting again some time i was able to start a restore with itunes but it lost connection during reboot and got stuck at the loading bar … no i'm trying again to get it recognized [20:48:32] you say it had an apple logo and a progress bar on the screen, and got stuck there somewhere? [20:48:54] that's the bootloader flashing phase, which should be running completely independently of itunes once it has started [20:48:59] was on 1px progress like 2h [20:49:18] shouldn't take more than a minute or two to finish [20:49:39] that also points towards issues while accessing the bootloader flash [20:49:43] then i tried a reset and i'm not sure if i should have done that … now i'm back at the problem from the beginning [20:49:53] no idea why that would happen, never seen that before [20:50:10] is there any possibility of water damage in this unit? [20:50:20] or was it maybe dropped/crushed very hard? [20:50:30] everywhere they say when pressing Menu+Select you should see a apple logo … never saw one except with the loading bar [20:51:42] this thing clearly has trouble with its bootloader flash, either data corruption or hardware damage [20:52:05] idk … the last few months i didn't use it and before i remember that the battery icon dropped to red in about 2h and the ipod worked like another 4-6h with a red battery icon [20:52:07] I'd probably try to start an emcore installer on it just to see how it behaves [20:52:42] that might provide some more insight what's going on with the hardware there [20:53:13] i just don't want to do something which could get me in trouble if i want to give it to apple for repair [20:53:40] ok, if that still has warranty on it, I'd return it just now [20:54:07] no it doesn't have warranty [20:54:08] but the battery behavior that you described sounds like either a very old unit (out of warranty) or water damage [20:54:59] well, if there's no warranty on that, I doubt that a repair would make sense economically... apple will charge you a fortune for that, if they do it at all [20:55:23] this is going to be a mainboard swap anyway, and I doubt they'll bother to look for any traces of third party software if it fails to restore from DFU mode [20:56:02] I also kinda expect our installer to fail before it even writes anything to the flash (that flash seems to be completely inaccessible from your description) [20:56:34] you can in theory try to diagnose it using emcore developer tools without leaving any trace, but that's a bit more involved than just trying to run an installer [20:58:52] 80gb silver -> 6th gen … and if i remember correct one of the first of that gen [20:58:52] repair because I do not want an ipod touch and i want more than 16GB [21:00:03] 80gb is always first generation classic, yes [21:00:48] I'm wondering if apple will even offer a repair/replacement for those [21:02:51] :( [21:08:05] best bet is probably to get a used one off ebay or something [21:12:17] yea … i'll try some things … ask in the apple shop what they would recommend when i'll get my macbook back from repair and if all fails … ebay or something similiar :/ [21:12:22] but thanks for the tips [21:16:29] ah yea: if i connect the ipod to the computer … sometimes i don't hear a connect sound … if press menu+select for some time the connect sound gets played … sometimes a disconnect sound gets played right after … if not … as soon as i start itunes the disconnect sound gets played during the "waiting for ipod" loading bar … its really strange [21:20:04] that all matches an ipod with a damaged bootloader (which itunes should be able to restore) [21:20:20] the fact that the flashing phase hung at the very beginning suggests hardware trouble [21:20:30] that it attempted to flash it all suggests an intermittent problem [21:20:59] all of that suggests contact issues on the main board, which could be caused by water damage or heavy mechanical abuse [21:23:32] hm … something someone with a little soldering knowledge could fix? (probably not … right?) [21:24:58] might be worth a try [21:25:04] but opening that case will damage it [21:30:42] hm … arg i don't really have enough freetime to try out things … i'll see what the apple store says when i fetch my macbook … and most likely i'll buy a working one from ebay [21:57:54] hm … perhaps an old defect ipod classic where they heard hdd noise together with msata-zif adapter and 250gb ssd … there are tutorials on how to open an ipod carefully [21:57:54] whatever … i'll see what i'll do later :)
